How to Make Your Home Safer for Your Family the Easy Way

“Home is where the heart is,” as the old adage goes. As a parent, you need to take extra steps in making sure that no harm will come to your family, especially in your home. Golden Assets & Property Management has rounded up what you need to know about safety hazards and what you should do about it.

Common safety hazards in every home:

  • Slippery floor
  • Cuts and burns
  • Falling objects
  • Drowning
  • Fire
  • Choking
  • Poison

What you can do to prevent it:

Accidents caused by slippery floor is a very common safety hazard inside the home. Slipping on wet and/or slippery tiled floor can cause minor bruises and cuts. In worse cases, a harsh fall can cause bleeding and broken bones.

To prevent accidents like these from happening, you have to take extra precautions. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Use anti-slip floor mats. There are anti-slip floor mats for bathroom tiles and for normal room use that you can buy at any hardware.
  2. Use anti-slip footwear. You can get this at footwear shops. If it’s more convenient, you can try to shop online. Don’t worry because there are plenty of affordable options out there.

Cuts and burns is also another safety hazard to watch out for especially for kids. Burns can be caused by hot water, oil, or any hot surface. Some burns heal pretty quickly, while some can leave the person scarred for life. Yikes!

But when you take the right steps and precautions, you’ll surely prevent accidental cuts and burns for your family. Here’s what you can do.

  1. Never leave the kitchen unattended. Keep out of reach hot water or throw it down the drain when you’re not going to use it anymore. Do the same for hot oils.
  2. If you’re frying or cooking with oil, make sure that your kids are well out of reach from the cooking stove.
  3. Store the knives, forks, barbecue sticks, other sharp kitchen tools  away from reach. If you think you need to, keep them under lock and key. Do the same for dad’s toolbox and razor blades.
  4. Make sure that drawers and cabinet doors are well maintained because small fragments of would that are sticking out can cause cuts when you accidentally rub past it.

When we say falling objects, we mean that in the most literal sense. Poorly installed or low quality shelves and  cabinets, for example, have a high risk of crashing when it can no longer take its load. To prevent objects from falling, especially on someone’s head or foot or important items, here’s what you can do.

  1. Regularly check screws and hinges
  2. Make sure you’re not overloading your storage spaces.
  3. Don’t hesitate to spend more money on high-quality shelves and cabinets with a thicker and denser material.

Kids love the water, especially in the summer. Drowning accidents happen, though, and you might want to take the necessary steps to prevent it. Golden has some tips for you.

  1. Fill bathtubs and inflatable pool halfway only and always be there to monitor.
  2. Don’t keep buckets and containers full of water. (Side note: these containers can be breeding grounds of mosquitoes too. yikes!)

Fires happen and it can happen to anyone. You may not expect it to happen, but preparing for the worst always ends up being the best in the long run. Beef up your home’s security by following these tips.

  1. Check your property’s wiring – have it rewired if necessary.
  2. Replace old plugs, electricity outlets, and extension wires.
  3. Turn off all appliances when not being used and especially when you are leaving home.
  4. Keep matches, lighters and candles away from children’s reach.
  5. Always keep a fire extinguisher
  6. Install a smoke detector and fire alarm.

One other thing that parents and homeowners should watch out for is choking. We at Golden know the difficulty in juggling parenthood and other responsibilities, so we’ve come up with these tips to help you prevent your children from choking at home.

  1. Check their food for bones and huge chunks before serving
  2. Keep toys, household decorations and other choke-able items properly.
  3. Use a baby monitor.

Poisoning is something you’d like to stay away from. It can get messy and expensive when this happens, and at times, can even be fatal. Take these steps to prevent poisoning from happening in your home. This one should be easy.

  1. Keep all detergents and other types of cleansers away from reach.
  2. Cosmetic products should also be stored properly.
  3. Always throw out rotten food.

At Golden, we call these steps a cost-cutter instead of being a cost. In the long run, you’ll end up saving more money while keeping your family safe from harm.
